Each smooth highly polished sphere is 2-3" in diameter and roughly weighs from about 11-13 ounces.
Mahogany Obsidian is a variety of naturally occurring volcanic glass primarily mined in regions such as Mexico, the United States (notably California and Oregon), and parts of Central America. It forms through rapid cooling of felsic lava rich in silica, which prevents crystal growth, resulting in a smooth, glassy texture.
Its distinctive deep reddish-brown hue, often with streaks or swirls resembling mahogany wood, is due to iron and other mineral inclusions within the silica matrix. Chemically, Mahogany Obsidian is mainly composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), with traces of iron, magnesium, and other elements that influence its coloration.
Historically, Mahogany Obsidian has been valued across cultures for its aesthetic and metaphysical properties. Indigenous peoples used it for cutting tools, arrowheads, and ceremonial objects due to its sharp edges when fractured.
In lapidary arts, it has been crafted into jewelry, amulets, and ornaments, symbolizing protection and grounding. Spiritually, it is believed to absorb negative energies, promote emotional healing, and enhance self-awareness. Scientifically, its amorphous structure offers insights into volcanic activity and rapid cooling processes. Its unique composition and properties make it both a prized gemstone and a subject of geological study.
