Hand Mined Uruguay Raw Blue Artigas Onyx Ruby Stone Natural Untreated Crystals for Arts, Crafts & Decor
One notable region in Uruguay where blue onyx can be hand-mined is the Artigas Department, located in the northern part of the country.
This area is renowned for its rich mineral deposits, including various forms of banded onyx. Historically, local artisans and miners have extracted blue onyx for jewelry and ornamental use, contributing to the region’s economy and cultural identity. Over the years, blue onyx has become a symbol of Uruguay’s natural beauty and craftsmanship, fostering pride among local communities.
Its striking blue hues have also gained popularity worldwide, often associated with tranquility and spiritual clarity. Metaphysically, blue onyx is believed to enhance communication, reduce stress, and promote emotional stability, making it popular in holistic healing practices globally. Chemically, blue onyx is a variety of cryptocrystalline quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) characterized by its layered, banded structure. It forms through the gradual deposition of mineral-rich water in cavities within volcanic or sedimentary rocks. Over time, silica deposits layer upon layer, creating the distinctive bands seen in blue onyx.
Its formation is a slow process, often taking thousands of years, with the blue coloration typically resulting from trace amounts of minerals like copper or other elements incorporated into the silica during formation.
