It is a variety of the mineral fuchsite, a chromium-rich form of muscovite mica, characterized by its rich green color due to traces of chromium and vanadium. Historically, verdite has been mined primarily in Africa, especially in Zimbabwe and South Africa, where it has been used for carving and jewelry for centuries. Its unique coloration and durability have made it a popular choice among artisans and collectors.

In terms of composition, verdite is primarily composed of potassium aluminum silicate with trace elements like chromium and vanadium that impart its characteristic green hue. Its mineral structure is layered, typical of micas, which contributes to its somewhat flaky appearance when cut.

On the Mohs scale of hardness, verdite scores about 2.5 to 3, making it relatively soft compared to many gemstones. For comparison, quartz ranks at 7, and diamond at 10.
